How to Spot Red Flags for a Bad Massage Experience

There are many benefits to getting a massage, but there are also risks associated with it. It's important to know what to look out for when choosing a massage therapist and understanding the signs of a bad massage experience. Here are some red flags to be aware of when booking a massage.

First, check the therapist's credentials. Make sure the therapist is licensed and certified to practice massage therapy. Ask the therapist if they have any specific training or certifications that could be beneficial for you. Additionally, check their reviews and references to see how other people have rated their services.
Next, ask about the therapist's experience. Find out how long they have been practicing massage therapy and if they have any specialties or areas of expertise. A more experienced and qualified therapist should be better able to identify your needs and provide a quality massage.

When you visit the massage therapist, pay attention to their level of professionalism. Are they courteous, friendly, and professional? Do they take the time to answer your questions and address any concerns you may have? A good massage therapist should make you feel comfortable and respected.
When booking a massage, it's also important to look out for any health and safety concerns. Make sure the massage therapist is using professional equipment and is practicing good hygiene. Ask to see the therapist's license and certification to ensure they are qualified to practice massage therapy. Additionally, make sure the massage room is clean and sanitary. Check the sheets and towels to make sure they are fresh and properly sanitized. Finally, make sure the massage therapist is using appropriate draping techniques to ensure your privacy and safety. By paying attention to these details, you can ensure you have a safe and enjoyable massage experience.
Finally, be aware of the massage environment. Does the massage therapist have a clean and inviting space? Are there any strange odours or strange noises in the room? Is the environment comfortable and relaxing? A good massage therapist should create a calming atmosphere for their clients.

By being aware of these red flags, you can ensure that you have a positive massage experience. If any of these warning signs appear, it's best to look for a different massage therapist. Taking the time to do your research and be aware of these potential issues can help you avoid a bad massage experience.

    Nyssa Craig

Hi friend, thanks so much for hopping on over here for a wee squizz at my many musings!

I'm Nyssa, a Brighton-based and Scottish-born massage therapist, placenta remedies specialist, birth support worker (full-spectrum doula), and fertility specialist.

I specialise in providing services to those often underserved by existing practitioners - particularly those who have felt excluded from mainstream service providers for ANY reason, such as weight, sexuality, gender identity, disability, neuroatypical processing, et cetera.
This blog is somewhere you can find my rants on all the above topics (and so much more - love a good rant, me!), as well as more information on my areas of specialism, given the frequent lack of discussion thereon.

So have a browse, and drop me a comment to let me know your own thoughts!
