Common Massage Myths

Massage is a popular form of therapy that has been around for centuries, but despite its widespread use, there are still many myths and misconceptions about the practice. In this blog post, I will dispel some of the most common massage myths and provide you with the facts about this therapeutic practice.
Myth #1: Massages are only for relaxation
While relaxation is a common reason for getting a massage, massages can also offer a range of therapeutic benefits. For example, deep tissue massage can help alleviate chronic pain and stiffness, sports massage can help improve athletic performance, and prenancy massage can help alleviate discomfort during pregnancy. Massage is a versatile form of therapy that can be tailored to meet your individual needs and goals.

Myth #2: Massages are only for the wealthy
While massages can be expensive at high-end spas, there are many affordable options available. Many health insurance plans also cover massage therapy for medical reasons, such as injury rehabilitation. Massage is a form of therapy that is accessible to people of all income levels.
Myth #3: Massages are only for women
Massages are not just for women – they are for anyone who wants to improve their physical and mental well-being. Many men and enbys receive massages for athletic performance, injury rehabilitation, and relaxation. Massage is a gender-neutral form of therapy that is suitable for people of all genders.

Myth #4: Massages are painful
While some types of massage, such as deep tissue massage, can be intense, they should not be painful. If you experience pain during a massage, you should immediately communicate with your massage therapist and ask them to adjust the pressure. A good massage therapist will always respect your comfort level and make adjustments as needed.
Myth #5: Massages are only for the back
Massages can be performed on any part of the body, including the back, neck, shoulders, arms, legs, and feet. Massage therapists can also use techniques to target specific areas of the body, such as the jaw for jaw pain or the hands for carpal tunnel syndrome. Massage is a versatile form of therapy that can address a wide range of physical and mental health concerns.

Myth #6: Massages can spread infection
Massage therapists follow strict hygiene protocols to ensure that their clients are protected from infection. They use clean linens, towels, and equipment, and they wash their hands before and after each massage. As long as you choose a reputable and licensed massage therapist, the risk of infection is minimal.

In conclusion, massage is a versatile form of therapy that can offer a range of therapeutic benefits. By dispelling these common massage myths, I hope to encourage more people to explore the many benefits of massage therapy.

    Nyssa Craig

Hi friend, thanks so much for hopping on over here for a wee squizz at my many musings!

I'm Nyssa, a Brighton-based and Scottish-born massage therapist, placenta remedies specialist, birth support worker (full-spectrum doula), and fertility specialist.

I specialise in providing services to those often underserved by existing practitioners - particularly those who have felt excluded from mainstream service providers for ANY reason, such as weight, sexuality, gender identity, disability, neuroatypical processing, et cetera.
This blog is somewhere you can find my rants on all the above topics (and so much more - love a good rant, me!), as well as more information on my areas of specialism, given the frequent lack of discussion thereon.

So have a browse, and drop me a comment to let me know your own thoughts!
