Lymphatic Drainage Massage for Oedema, Relaxation & Detoxification
What is this treatment?
Sometimes referred to as Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), Lymphatic Drainage Massage is an extremely gentle, non-invasive manual therapy designed to stimulate the lymphatic system. This system is crucial for immune function, waste removal, and maintaining healthy fluid balance in the body.
Crucially, unlike the circulatory system which has the heart as a natural pump, the lymphatic system has no endogenous 'pump' system of its own. It relies on muscle movement, breathing, and external pressure to circulate fluid. This is why it often requires manual stimulation to function optimally, especially after a significant shock to the system, such as surgery, injury, or periods of immobility.
This specialised treatment uses light, rhythmic, and sweeping motions applied directly to the skin to encourage lymph fluid to move away from swollen or congested areas and towards lymph nodes where it can be properly filtered and drained. Furthermore, tightness and restriction within the myofascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles) can physically compress and impede lymphatic vessels. Therefore, this massage addresses this physical restriction, meaning that general stress, 'knots,' and tightness can also contribute to a slow-draining lymphatic system, which this treatment helps to resolve.
This option is specifically tailored to address oedema (chronic swelling) and related conditions, while also serving as a potent treatment for general relaxation, detoxification, and immune support. It is a cornerstone of complementary health support for managing fluid dynamics and reducing swelling without the discomfort of deep tissue work.
What can you expect?
Your first session will begin with a thorough history and consultation, with a particular focus on the presence and management of lymphoedema, if applicable. We will map out your treatment plan moving forward.
Lymphatic Drainage Massage is performed while you are lying on the treatment table. The techniques are very light and subtle, involving smooth, circular, or pumping motions on the skin. Clients often describe the experience as profoundly relaxing, frequently leading to a meditative state or sleep due to the calming effect it has on the nervous system.
You will remain fully covered with large towels throughout the treatment, with only the area being worked on exposed. While this treatment is predominantly performed without the use of a medium, any products or tools I may utilise are always certified vegan and of the highest quality.
In adherence to my stringent cleaning protocol, all linens are laundered at 90°C and the treatment space undergoes comprehensive anti-bacterial and UV sterilisation between all client sessions.
