Somatic therapy - the practice of releasing stress and trauma stored directly in the body’s physical tissues - has officially gone mainstream. And frankly, it is about time. For decades, we have been told that we can "think" or "talk" our way out of stress. But as anyone who has ever had a tight neck during a high-pressure week knows, your nervous system speaks in the language of physical sensation, not words. Indeed, my own clients are only too intimately aware of how often discussion of the concept of the separation of body from mind/self/spirituality is core to their therapeutic journey - especially for those socialised as women. However, as these practices go viral, a big question is emerging: Do you really need to join a screaming circle to regulate your nervous system? At The WellNyss Tree, I believe there is a quieter, deeply therapeutic alternative. The Science Behind the 'Shake' The theory behind the viral trends is actually scientifically sound. It is based on Somatic Experiencing, a body-first approach to stress recovery. When wild animals survive a predator chase, they naturally shake their bodies to discharge the massive spike of adrenaline and cortisol. Humans, however, have learned to override this natural mechanism. When we receive a stressful email, or navigate a difficult personal situation, we don't shake it off. We sit still, bottle it up, and most especially, being British, we "keep calm and carry on". That unused stress energy doesn't disappear. It gets stored as physical "armouring" - manifesting as chronic muscle tightness, shallow breathing, and a nervous system that is perpetually stuck in "fight or flight". The Loud Release vs. The Safe Container While shaking and screaming can offer a temporary, cathartic burst of relief, they can sometimes overstimulate an already exhausted nervous system. If your body is already feeling overwhelmed, throwing it into a high-intensity, performative environment might not actually signal "safety". True somatic release doesn't have to be loud. In fact, the most profound physical shifts happen when the body feels completely quiet, supported, and secure. This is where skilled, clinical bodywork comes in. How I Facilitate Somatic Release at The WellNyss Tree Instead of leaving you to navigate a chaotic sensory experience, my work at The WellNyss Tree focuses on gentle, targeted myofascial release and nervous system regulation. By working directly with your fascia - the connective tissue wrapping around your muscles that acts as the physical archive of your stress - we achieve somatic release through:
Listen to Your Body If you are feeling the heavy toll of digital burnout and chronic stress, you do not need to scream to find peace. You simply need to give your body the permission - and the dedicated time - to let go of the brace. At The WellNyss Tree, your quiet analogue reset is waiting.
